By Esther Lewittes, "one of the most'colorful' personalities among the jewelers working in the Los Angeles area" in the 1960s, according to Marbeth Schon in the beautiful book. These handsome mid-century modern earrings are really appealing.

With the clean lines and cool design of the best studio jewelry, they are a study in rectangular and rounded geometric forms. The circular shape of a basic "button" earring is changed significantly by notching it on two sides. And the rectangular notches echo the slightly recessed and darkly oxidized cut outs on half the disk, while the rounded ones on the other side echo the circular shape of the earrings. The effect is dramatic and striking and they are quite interesting. The asymmetrically symmetrical patterns are jazzy and sculptural and the design really pops out at you, providing contrast, depth and interest.

When she moved to California from New York she opened her own gallery. These earrings are an exceptional example of the kind of work for which this artist is best known.

They are signed "Ster Lewittes" on both backs and "Sterling" on the clip on findings. The earrings are slightly convex and measure about 13/16 diameter. They are in Very Good vintage condition with just surface dirt, scratches and tarnish as expected for their age (over half a century).

They are not dented or dinged; any impression to the contrary in my poor photos notwithstanding. There are slight inconsistencies in execution (in the notched and cut out shapes) that provide a wonderful sense of the hand of the artist. These handsome earrings are wearable works of art and will frame your face beautifully.

They would make a terrific gift although I doubt you will want to part with them, and will come to you in a gift box, just in case. As an outstanding example of fabulous fifties design by a noted mid-century modernist studio artist, these cool earrings will make a superb addition to a collection of sterling, 50s modernism, studio jewelry and of course, earrings. A sensational and rare pair of vintage earrings by Esther Lewittes with an unusual jazzy design that will delight any collector! Please see our other listings for more great vintage jewelry. Both methods include gift box.
